Young Bulls Going At It, Yellowstone National Park, WY, USA
Yellowstone holds a special place in my heart. It's called the Serengeti of North America for a reason. In the summer, it's a crazy place filled with humans doing crazy things. In the winter however, it's a different story. Sure there are visitors. But a lot fewer. And of course many of the animals are still around (the bears are mostly sleeping though). This image depicts two young bull moose practicing for the future when they'll have to battle for real for the attention of a mate. The temperature on that morning was MINUS 24 Celsius. And that's cold. At least it was for me. Tip GET OUT OF BED. Often the best wildlife action occurs just after sunrise and just before sunset. So find out when sunrise occurs and plan on being in the field just before that. That means getting out of bed in the dark, driving in the dark and getting your gear ready in the dark. Particularly in the summer, that can be a challenge. Heck, when I was in Alaska a few years back, there really wasn't a sunset in June. But I'm sure you get the point. Get up, get out and be ready.
